24 March 2018 - Don't Stare at the Sun!

Children Have Two Eyes, Two Ears, and Two Feet

"They will never have more, nor will they be able to replace what they have. As a parent it is your responsibility to help them safeguard these precious body parts."

Typically, if your kids attend daycare or school, there are adults that can help you monitor hearing or seeing issues. These senses are essential for development. If your kiddo has a hard time seeing you might need to make an appointment.

Hearing is something that is often overlooked.
Pediatricians can do simple hearing tests if you think something might be off.
Today, most newborns are given a hearing test before being discharged from the hospital.

Feet.
We don't think much about it.
Our Almanac suggests that you don't give kids second hand shoes unless they are in really good condition. A good pair of shoes for active kids is important.

...

There is nothing here that talks about kids who do weird things.

SUCH AS

Play with their food rather than eat but then put toys in their mouths.

Sing in the shower or give themselves bathroom pep talks as if the rest of the house can't hear them.

Put dirty socks in their closet rather than a designated laundry basket.

Also, like the title of my post says, I have had to more than once remind my toddler not to stare at the sun! For reals!

SO

Most of these behaviors are evidentially super normal. As normal as anything a child from 0 to 10 can be. Kids are super weird. They are just figuring life out as they go, just like the rest of us.

So it's totally ok to worry about their health and make sure they are good.

Their weird mannerisms are normal so let those worries slide.

Just have a glass of wine, sit back, and relax on this ride called parenthood!

30 January 2018 - Scotch Woodcock Two Ways...and more

Scotch Woodcock - Two Recipes "From Mrs. Beeton's nineteenth century homemaking guide: Spread hot buttered toast thinly with anchovy paste. Pour over a sauce made by stirring three beaten egg yolks into 1/4 pint cream, bring to a boiling point, but do not allow to boil or the sauce will curdle." This is a traditional Victorian recipe as you can tell because we get a return from Mrs. Beeton in today's Almanac post. Basically this becomes a creamy scrambled egg on toast with anchovy paste.  This is the second recipe for today "Add finely chopped hard cooked eggs to a white sauce that has been seasoned with anchovy sauce and paprika. Pour over toast." If you are wondering what eggs has to do with the title of the recipe just know that most Scottish recipes that contain chicken in it will have the word "Cock" in there too. (Don't blush you prudes) I'm not trying to be silly. (Get your head out of the gutter) ...

Your County Agents Offer a Lot of Good Help "How much use have you made of the free services offered by your county agent? Today is the anniversary of the Cooperative Extension Service, established May 8, 1914." The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service is an agency within the United States Department of Agriculture.  Our Almanac says that your County Agricultural Agent offers many free publications about lawn care, gardening, shrubs, trees, flowers, food and cooking, clothing, home furnishing, and house hold money management.
