23 March 2018 - Save Some Bread on Your Morning Toast

Serve Breakfast for Less

"Breakfast can be inexpensive and still provide its share of the day's food requirements."

Here is the scoop on breakfast.

According this article from Today, Breakfast is really the most important meal of the day.

Our Almanac has this to say about saving your breakfast food budget.

1. Evaporated Milk, Skim Milk, and Buttermilk may be less expensive than fluid whole milk.

Evaporated Milk is creamier and thicker with more than half of the water removed. Use it in your smoothies or sweeten your coffee.

2. Buy Less Expensive Eggs

Choose lower grade eggs. Grade A eggs are best for boiling, frying, and poaching. Use lower grade eggs for scrambling, omelets, and baking.

3. Fresh Fruits

Buy in season fruits that cost less to stock. Otherwise getting frozen is just as good!

NOW

Let's get real. How can you apply these to the real world?

My family eats cereal about every other morning to save time to get ready for school.
On the other days, I usually make some eggs and toast.
On the weekends we have waffles!
I make up the batter and cook them in my waffle iron. The recipe I have makes a lot so I save the rest for another morning.

I think the key is to have a plan or a routine. This way you can buy the same items at the store and knowing what you will make in the morning will save you time.

Another option is to make a mid morning snack!

If you have a small breakfast, then take something healthy to munch on later. This way you are not getting so HANGRY that you make yourself miserable at lunch....

or scare the others around you...

30 January 2018 - Scotch Woodcock Two Ways...and more

Scotch Woodcock - Two Recipes "From Mrs. Beeton's nineteenth century homemaking guide: Spread hot buttered toast thinly with anchovy paste. Pour over a sauce made by stirring three beaten egg yolks into 1/4 pint cream, bring to a boiling point, but do not allow to boil or the sauce will curdle." This is a traditional Victorian recipe as you can tell because we get a return from Mrs. Beeton in today's Almanac post. Basically this becomes a creamy scrambled egg on toast with anchovy paste.  This is the second recipe for today "Add finely chopped hard cooked eggs to a white sauce that has been seasoned with anchovy sauce and paprika. Pour over toast." If you are wondering what eggs has to do with the title of the recipe just know that most Scottish recipes that contain chicken in it will have the word "Cock" in there too. (Don't blush you prudes) I'm not trying to be silly. (Get your head out of the gutter) ...
