10 Ways to Save Money When You Grocery Shop
The 1970's Homemaker was just as budget conscience when it comes to the grocery bill as we are today! There is a lot of sound advice that is still applicable today as it was then. I think it is wise to remember the wisdom of those who have the life experience we have yet to get.
So with that I'm going to run through our Homemaker Heroine's tips and spin it on our 2018 experience.
1. Refer to the Notes You Made on Your Calendar
Oh you thought we wouldn't talk about this again! Well you was wrong!
Plan out your dinners for the week and make a list for the ingredients you need.
2. Keep a List of Food Staples and Cleaning Supplies
What do you always need? What are you running low on?
For me I have laundry detergent, dish soap, dishwasher pods, etc. that I always make sure I have enough of. As well as toilet paper and paper towels!
3. Take Advantage of Sales
Today there is an app for that!
I use Flipp or just keep the ads that come in the mail. With Flipp I can see on my shopping list if there is a sale for that item at one of my local stores.
4. Avoid "Compulsive Buying"
I call this impulse shopping. You don't need the Double Stuff Oreos. You just want them. And Oooo look those chips on are on sale. That thing I kinda want to try is here so maybe I should throw it in the cart.
I recently started using the Click List at my store so I only get what I put on my list. On the plus they deliver it to my car in the parking lot. The future is here people!
5. Don't Supermarket Hop
Don't go from store to store unless it is really worth while. Maybe it is okay if your store hopping is along the same route and you won't waste gas on this shopping trip.
6. Check the Price and Quantity
Look at those price tags. Many stores will actually tell you on the tags what you are paying per ounce or item. This is great for calculating your savings. Just because one package is cheaper doesn't mean it is the best value.
We are also Costco members and take full advantage of those prices. I buy all our meat there plus some extra items.
Here are some of the crazy bulk things I have bought:
A quart of Soy Sauce
10 pounds of Rice
About a gallon of Syrup
8 pounds of spaghetti
I'm a huge fan of Costco
7. Make Sure the Price is Legible
Are you sure the price on that item is the price you will pay at checkout?
Don't glance over and impulse buy if the price isn't right.
8. Weigh Your Produce
Make sure you are not surprised at check out when you spend $10 on grapes because the price tag said $2.99 a pound and they are not in season and now you have overspent on your produce.
So to tag along with this, it is good to get what is in season. You will find the best deals on seasonal produce.
9. Add Up Your Estimated Cart Total
This part made me chuckle.
"Use a pocket computer or adding machine"
So for today's purposes we have a phone that can keep track of our ad's, lists, and add up the total for us. This is great if you are trying to keep to a certain amount on your shopping trip.
10. Watch the Items Ring Up
Position yourself at checkout where you can see the items total up. This is good for catching if sale items scan correctly or if a mistake is made. I especially do this if I have coupons! Sometimes the computer will not honor a coupon and I will have to show I have the correct item. The clerks are usually good about manually putting in savings.
Make 2018 your year to get your grocery shopping on track!
