The Importance of Reading to Your Children
"Educators agree that most children who are good readers are those who have had early exposure to reading. They are read to by parents; they see magazines, newspapers, and books in the home; and they acquire a value for reading by seeing their parents read"
Amen!
We started reading to our twins early on. Small little baby books. One of my favorites was a book called "Eyes, Nose, Fingers, and Toes"
It was Sesame Street book and they played along pointing to their eyes, nose, fingers, and toes.
It was adorable
They have since graduated to "Diary of a Wimpy Kid", comic books, and taking Accelerated Reader tests at school. They are super proud to read.
Today's readers are enjoying some fun and comical books where as in my day books were not for little snowflakes.
I was gifted books written by R.L. Stein.
Goosebumps
Look at that art work! It was the best!
This quickly led to reading on to the Fear Street book series
OMG!
I was obsessed with these books. Disappearances, murder, possessions, and ancient family curses that haunt the inhabitants of Fear Street.
I mean if you are going to live on Fear Street you have to know what you are getting yourself into.
And I don't know about you but these books below here were just readily available for us to read and get nightmares from the illustrations.
I do not know what your childhood was if you didn't read these before bedtime.
Thanks to my husband for reminding me of these!
Of course these books broke my little mind just enough to be able to withstand horror movies and novels. I mean IT might by one of my favorite books and the new movie was a pure masterpiece.
Now if you are sitting back judging me just know I am not forcing my kids to read books like these. Absolutely not. It is not how it was in my childhood where adults paid little attention to what was warping our little heads.
Also, if you go back and read some original children's stories they are just ripe with child abandonment, assault, witchcraft, and death of all types.
Snow White's step mom literally paid someone to take Snow's heart out and when that didn't work she poisoned poor Snow. I mean what a happy fun time.
Reading should fun and enjoyable to the reader. I enjoyed these books! My kids would not! I let them choose their books and that is important. Let your kids explore the library and book store so they can find what they like.
Encourage and reward your little readers no matter what they enjoy reading
