Store Clothing Away Properly to Prevent Mildew
"Clothing stored in mothproof containers usually is also safe from mildew"
Yesterday was about moths and today is about mildew.
I'm getting a little grossed out by my closet right about now. What other hidden dangers is the almanac preparing me for right now?
On the plus side, many man made fibers are resilient to mildew growth.
What is Mildew?
It is mold.
Gross gross slimy mold.
This usually happens when you have humid areas that just create some moist atmospheres.
Since closets are small spaces without air flow, it is a great equation for making mildew.
How can you prevent mildew growth?
This is the part of my almanac that I love.
They suggest using chemicals to protect fabrics while they are stored away.
One such is a compound called paradichlorobenzene.
You know that when the word is long and hard to pronounce it has to be bad news bears.
This compound can help keep moths, mildew, and mold under control.
It is most commonly used in the production of urinal cakes.
No
Not that!
Here we go!
A Urinal Cake!
Now with every chemical, this particular one has the capability to be a carcinogen.
This is because the compound is not easily broken down inside organisms and can actually be stored away in our fatty tissue.
Now if you feel a little uneasy about using this chemical you can always go for a natural chemical compound such as biphenyl.
Biphenyl is less letters and easier maybe to pronounce so you know it's better.
This is used to prevent the growth of molds and fungus.
It is mildly toxic so, like a urinal cake, it isn't meant for consumption.
This stuff is also flammable!
Like a spark could cause it to explode.
And while a fire could get rid of your mold issue, it isn't recommended.
I honestly feel that since I Googled this I ended up on some FBI list.
Please Mr. FBI Man, I swear it was just for my blog research.
